The Search for Consensus

Reading two troll comments which thread-necromanced an old Kill Ten Rats post entitled "Warhammer Online: Biggest Failure Ever" made really wonder about human nature.

Why is it that we insist on googling for people who make the same statements as us?

Are we so insecure in our opinions that we seek validation that someone else out there thinks like us?

Do we want to be in the majority to feel justified feeling the way we do?

Is there a sense of vindication that comes from going "Aha, he agrees with me, therefore he is smart" and "Boo, he disagreed with me, stupid post, dumb a$$hole!?!1one!"?

Logic dictates that there are bound to be people who think the same, people who think differently, and a lot of people in the middle who don't give a fuck. :P

(Normal distribution curve and all, y'know.)

Still, I guess most humans are ruled by a little less logic and a lot more emotion.

I wonder what evolutionary advantage there was in feeling good when you found people in agreement with you? Not getting killed over a disagreement, maybe? That's assuming that someone didn't kill you for being a prick while you were engaged on said search for consensus opinion...
