Tale 5 has started, and I've made a character over on that shard. My big dream of contributing to a massive powerhouse guild has been somewhat stymied by two members - Australians who created a humongous public resource works over on Bastet - deciding they'd rather be hermits this Tale, and live off by themselves and grow flowers and do genetics.
Ah well. Easy come, easy go. I can rather sympathise, since I plopped down in Bastet full of one goal - to build my own self-sufficient factory compound(s) on my own, regardless of how slow I am compared to everyone else - and leave my own unique mark on the landscape. That means I end up hermiting, pretty much, not beholden to anybody, living far away enough not to have people come by and ruin "my" countryside.
They, on the other hand, have been living a very public life, right down at the heart of the chariot stop, running the world's most massively ambitious public works project - right down to a fleet of 23+ public Raeli ovens that have hit almost every colour possible. So all manner of people and noobs alike have been interacting with them. I can see why they'd rather have some peace and quiet for a while.
I haven't approached Zfree either, mostly because they look like they've settled down to become a quiet private guild. I figure that can be a last resort if my current guild implodes.
Speaking of which, the area where we've settled down looks like Bastet Refugees Annonymous - or rather, most of tehm's and Verix's/merek's friends. Without guild technology being researched yet, we still feel like a very disparate group of individuals, living in isolation if close together, and I don't know if the guild idea will take off.
None of us are contributing to research much this time around, I think we've gotten somewhat lazy, which is ironic because this time I'm all gung-ho for it and feel like making it part of my goals here - as long as I have free guild infrastructure to back it up.
Since no one appears to have surfaced to organise big research projects yet, the alternative goal I've focused on is to improve our private guild's resources and infrastructure. There's a ferry and various conveniences that need building. I also flax very well, so that's something I can work on too, building up our stockpiles of canvas and linen.
Strangely, the thought of failure doesn't worry me this time around. tehm and merek are highly unlikely to backstab me and lock me out of using any resources - they're high profile and have always been friendly on Bastet. It is probable that tehm might get bored and decide to quit after a few months. merek's pretty resilient, but if it's just me and him, I might get bored shortly too. Hopefully some of the other people we've attracted don't burn out too.
I'm also mentally prepared for the ultimate backstabbing drama of someone else that tehm and Verix thought they trusted coming by and swiping everything out from under us.
The point is that my heart and home and hearth are way back on Bastet. Nothing can take my place away from me on Bastet except the eventual reset or me getting bored and/or running out of subscription money for my pair + extra alts per month as required to be self-sufficient.
With that in place, my foundation is strong and I can easily give up the Amunret shard, as Main is now entitled. It's my ultimate experiment in social living.
And some folks hate the two shard option. Splits the playerbase, they decry. Me, I love the fact it gives more room to experiment with different playstyles.
And I believe the Dunbar's Number for virtual communities is around 250-300. Let's see if Amunret settles that way or no. Main shard, imo, was overcrowded at 852-ish people.
