Pet Peeve #1039 - Contractors who don't do as they're told, don't really give a fuck, and do a half-assed job.
Mostly because I have been inhaling paint/varnish fumes the whole day at work, when the contractors have been told REPEATEDLY (nicely and not-so-nicely) by various people, including bosses, the guy who hired them, me - the person being affected to observe certain basic rules of ventilation when using them.
Hello, we have kids around and the public and potential asthma-sufferers and a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Not to mention a disgruntled employee, who has previously had bronchial asthma, and owns a very sensitive nose and poorly working lungs, who is feeling more than a little brain damaged and headache-y after being forced to stay in the vicinity for 4 hours to inhale the air there, and wondering about work-related health hazards and dreaming of compensation and insurance claims.
It makes me very grumpy. We have had one contractor who managed to paint an entire section of the building with very little smell (they had some kind of paint extraction system to remove most of the odor).
Meanwhile this other contractor just starts painting and varnishing and gluing and only AFTER people start pointing out that the central air-conditioning system is sending fumes everywhere, do they go, "yeah yeah, no problem, we are bringing a fan down to blow it out of the emergency access door." Repeatedly. Every day.
Wtf? First time, accident, didn't realize, no problem.
After that, why don't you have the bloody door OPEN before you even start, and preferably even have the fan in place BEFORE cracking open a can.
Days like this, it's really good that Singapore limits easy access to guns and other shooty and stabby implements.

Sometimes I wonder if it the low salary.
If you raise the salary of the people actually doing the job (of installation) while also raising the bar for performance, would it weed out all the incompetents?
Same for admin staff and clerks.
