In Favor of Mindless Action

This weekend has been pretty durned slow for teaming in general, let alone finding good teams. Perhaps everyone is counting on their Sunday and Memorial Day Monday to play, which does absolutely apeshit for me since I haveta work Mon and Tue.

Oh well, guess every week is like a lottery. Last week I managed to run through a great Sister Psyche TF with a non-taunt but passable aggro-holding tank on Ravenhill, complete with hilarious /scrapper/ whiner who demanded the tank get taunt and got himself booted off the team (rule of thumb: never insult and heap continual abuse on the tank who also happens to be team leader. Also never run off to take on mobs by yourself in some weird corner of the map and then blame your death on the fact that the tank has no taunt - actually the tank was busy with the rest of the team at -this- corner, tough noogies. Guy was amazingly amusing, lacked shadow punch, and his smite did 44 damage compared with my 100+ damage smite. And I was only a level higher or so.) so I guess my good luck is about used up. :)

You know the AT that has the utmost rotten luck finding a team? Nope, not controller, not defender. A frickin' blaster. Even though invites were slow on the lowbie defs, they were still coming, Vesuvius has sat LFT for one hour around the place while I cleaned up my room and no one bit at all.

Frigging amazing. Especially since now he has two extremely powerful AoEs (fire breath does 50 per tick, total 150, and fireball around 90 hp on anything that hits) and two single-targets (fire blast 100, and just picked up blaze, barely slotted and hitting for 90). Cloaking device allows for really good positioning, and so on. I solo'ed a bunch of missions before getting very bored at the hit-and-run and tried to LFT. Total silence. Sad.

Oh, except for a lvl 22 defender who wanted 'help' on his cape mission. Gee, that sounds familiar. What is with these people, how come they can't even solo their own cape mission? Seems like this mission is like the best to solo these days - then you can say you really EARNED your own cape. He's not even a controller, he was dark def and had two blasts. You'd just have to single-target pull and rinse and repeat.

Mobs were blue to me. Easy peasy. Didn't I just solo a Tenacious yellow-con mission? Target drone on. Walk up with cloaking. Position. Fire breath. Fireball. Clean up strays with single-target shots. Poor bugger couldn't even get a debuff or a control laid on them before they died.

I suppose it'll get trickier at 30+. May have to start learning trip mines, time bomb and so on ad nauseam, yadda yadda.

All my lowbie defenders and tank have had the cruddy luck to run into really dysfunctional teams this weekend, where the team leaders do not know how to select/pick missions and/or picked a level 12 mission when they were level 18. (In the first place, I'm not sure what possessed this guy to invite lvl 12s to 18s on the same team. Sheer ignorance, I think.)

So yea, I got bored, and I didn't feel like making my own team.

And here we get back to the point of the post: Mindless Action.

Didn't feel like soloing, and I really ought to finish some of my single-player games. Decided to crank up Doom 3, even though I'm closer to finishing EFFB.

Wow, is Doom 3 good for mindless action or what.

Let's not comment about story or plot. There's just enough to be tolerable in this picky day and age. Unfortunately, no subtitles option makes it a bit annoying.

But it's a damn good suspense/horror/action game.

When you're in the mood for not bothering about thinking and just...reacting, it's superlative.

It's good to just blow stuff up every once in a while. So many games keeping harping on thinking, on strategy, on something real sophisticated...Sheesh, too much for one's brain sometimes.

Doom 3's no adventure RPG like Deus Ex: Invisible War - which is also kinda fun, btw. No adventure/talkie/immersive mood like Vampire: Bloodlines. No sneak/visceral action/adventure like Escape From Butcher Bay...

It's just...AHHH. OMFG. BANG BANG. BOOM.

Then quiet time until the next shock.

It reminds me so much of good 'horror' movies. All the suspense bits. The gore and sheer gross-out value, complete with onslaughts of zombies/demons/and really freaky spider hordes. The spiders did NOT help, because of this ongoing thread in the Reaper Forums. Bit of a spoiler perhaps, but it was like the attack of the Badly Mutated Camel Spiders.

Mentally screamed like a little girl and switched to the -machine gun- to take them out. No wonder these guys in Iraq nail camel spiders with their rifles.

I feel like playing it again. Except it's now night-time. Wonder if I can go to sleep after that? Heh. :P
